Fisch zu viert

Rudolf has not much to laugh:
For thirty years, he has worked for the sisters Charlotte, Cecilia and Clementine. He has spent secretly tender hours with each of them. The sisters do not know about the others’ adventures.  For his loyal services all three have considered him in their will. When Rudolf calls for the early redemption of his heritage, this will have unpleasant consequences.
A black comedy full of irony and tension around greed and cunning.

A night you will crack up so hard, I can still feel my belly muscels ache today!

Die Gorillas: Improvisation Theatre

Improvisation theatre - what is this? What is it like? I wanted to discover this for you and thus attended the show “Das große 7” by Die Gorillas in the Ratibor Theater in  Kreuzberg. You may ask yourself – pure improvisation, how is this possible? I found out that improvisation theatre doesn’t mean pure improvisation. First, it is played in the frame of a show and second, there are some scenes that have been rehearsed in advance.

So in this particular show, there are 4 actors. At the beginning, the audience chooses 1 out of the 4 as presenter who leads you through the show. Then 4 rounds follow in which the 3 remaining actors show their talents. Each round is a different way of presenting a character – what kind of character they have to play is instructed by the audience. After each round, one actor is voted by the viewers and at the end, one of them is chosen as the leading actor. The second part of the show is an improvised play with the leading actor just mentioned. The others play supporting roles. Thus there is still a lot of improvisation.

The question is: How did I like it? Continue reading

Jam session, Tuesdays @ Edelweiß

I have to admit that I´m actually not the biggest Jazz expert. I listen to nice jazz from time to time as a lot of people do, but I would rather say that my Jazz encounters are limited to several small concerts and drowning background music in a restaurant.

As some friend told me about this Jam Seesion in Edelweiß and how much he liked it there I found the perfect opportunity to test this location for our culture blog! So on a Tuesday evening I went there with Schiggy and was totally open for my new musical adventure! Continue reading

Helmut Newton Stiftung/Museum für Fotografie

Helmut Newton Stiftung/Museum für Fotografie” is located at Jebsen Strasse 2 close to the the U-bahn and S-bahn station Zoologischer Garten.

Whenever I was passing Zoologischer Garten by S-bahn, I was curious about this museum. Finally, on Thursday evening when entrance fee is free, I went there.

This Museum does contain 250 of Helmut Newton’s best. Helmut’s lifelong fascination of the female body surely reflected through this exhibition. To me, as he took many fashion photoshoots, it attracted me to see his pieces.  Its not allowed to take pictures inside and there are pictures online. Bajadere

This ballet, plotting in a scenery of Indian temples and palaces, deals with the story of a true, but forbidden love . It’s one of the classical type of stories like Romeo and Juliet which enchanted the people in the past until up today and is therefore a “must see”.
Long story short: Nikia, the Bajadere, has dedicated her life as a temple dancer to the gods, loves the noble warrior Solor. But he is already Hamsatti and promised to the daughter of the powerful Rajah as a husband who, driven by jealousy, gets the temple dancer murded. Only in the mysterious “Kingdom of Shadows” the lovers will be united.

Even if you think you are not a fan of ballets, you should not miss this one!
It will change your opinion. The great stage installation in combination with the colourful costumes enchant you to the world of Indian temples and palaces!

An event I will definetely remember!

An amazing woman: Frida Kahlo

I picked my bike and rode to the Martin-Gropius-Bau – a great place to see some of Berlin’s best exhibitions. It is located near Potsdamer Platz. What did I want to see there? The current Frida Kahlo exhibition, one of the largest retrospectives about this woman. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is the best known mexican – if not even latin-american – female artist. Her genre can be described as surrealistic. However she seems to have developed her very personal style, inspired by old Aztec and Mayan arts. I can imagine that this is because – beside social and political motifs -  the majority of her works is about her personal situation. I think it was her way to handle her pain and sorrows.

I loved this exhibition – it was overwhelming. Amazing photographs tell the story of Kahlo’s life – a very eventful life: A terrible bus accident in 1925 changed her life forever – pain, disability and never ending operations became part of her everyday life. Another sorrow was her unfaithful husband Diego Rivera whom she deeply loved. She also suffered from various abortions.  Nevertheless she always was a very strong woman. Her paintings are powerful – from the color to the motif. Continue reading

Something completely different…

Berlin doesn’t only welcome round about 4000 Erasmus students every year, but is (as the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany) also home to many different embassies. Thanks to my dad, I found out about the cultural program offered by the Indian embassy: It varies from music to exhibitions and dance, mainly classical. The embassy offers this kind of entertainment as a representation of the country, featuring talented and well-known Indian artists that would tour from country to country and that for free. Christopher Street Day

On Saturday, June 19, the Berlin Gay Pride Parade(Christopher Street Day), now in its 32nd year, took place in the same area of Schoneburg (although with a slightly new route in 2010). It commenced at 1 pm at the corner of Kurfurstendamn and Knesebeckstrasse, and proceeded east past Wittenbergplatz and Nollendorfplatz, then turned left (north) and runed through leafy Tiergarten park to the towering Victory Column (Siegessaule), before turning east through the park to end at Brandenburg Gate. The parade lasted until 5 pm, after which there’s a Pride Rally in the shadows of Brandenburg Gate. [Source]

“Versus” acrobatics, theatre, dance

Last weekend, my parents came visitng me here in Berlin, and as going with them to a party was not really my intention, a great idea came to my mind: grabbing the oportunity to experience one slice of Berlin´s big culture cake! Next decison to make was- Where to go? I could remember a great performance from the long night of theatres and operas. Its name was Versus, a kind of acrobatics-variety-crossover! Even then I was so amazed by this rousing and breathtaking show; I absolutely wanted to see the whole piece! What better chance to see this great show than with my parents?

All in all it was just amazing and highly recommendable!!! For those of you who like to see flying, swirling people and beautiful acrobatics. Who likes to be entertained (this show even involves the audience very amusingly- the whole hall was laughing) and explosive movements combined with great touching music, this is the right place for you!
